Destin is a somewhat small coastal city (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Florida. With a population of 14,247 people and six constituent neighborhoods, Destin is the 177th largest community in Florida.
Destin home prices are not only among the most expensive in Florida, but Destin real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.
Unlike some cities, Destin isn’t mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Destin are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Destin is a city of sales and office workers, managers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Destin who work in management occupations (16.94%), sales jobs (15.50%), and food service (9.85%).
Also of interest is that Destin has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 8.83% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Another notable thing is that Destin is an extremely popular vacation destination. A significant portion of the population is seasonal. During the vacation season, the city experiences a large influx of people who take up residence in second homes they own in the area. As the vacation season ends, the population drops again, leaving behind a substantially quieter and smaller city.
Destin is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities.
As is often the case in a small city, Destin doesn’t have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The education level of Destin ranks among the highest in the nation. Of the 25-and-older adult population in Destin, 41.59% have at least a bachelor’s degree. The typical US community has just 21.84% of its adults holding a bachelor’s degree or graduate degree.
The per capita income in Destin in 2018 was $45,324, which is wealthy relative to Florida and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $181,296 for a family of four. However, Destin contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
Destin is a somewhat ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Destin home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Destin residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Destin include German, Irish, English, Italian, and French.
The most common language spoken in Destin is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Portuguese.
